Development Workshop 1: Grime

For this week's task we were asked to revisit one of the tracks that we created in the previous weeks, and to then edit, add and improve the track, as well as extend it to at least one minute. The track that I decided to revisit and improve was my grime track; I chose the grime track because I was creating a drill track for my own personal project and got inspired by this, so I wanted to retry the grime track.

The first thing I wanted to change on the grime track was the drums as I was not really feeling them for the track and felt the bass in the loop was too much. I found a more appropriate drum loop online that I think suited the track much better and did not have overpowering bass as part of the drum loop, this gave me more room to make my own bassline for the track while letting the drums have their own space in the track. Next time if I were to do it differently, I would try and create my own grime drum loops instead of using a drum loop for grime and drill music to make it fit completely with the track.

The next part of my track that I wanted to revisit, and change was the bass pattern of the track. As I had used a different drum loop without any bass in it, I was able to strip back my bass pattern and keep it simple by using the step sequencer, I used slightly different notes for my new pattern in the new track and changed the root note from D2 to C2. Also, I used 64 steps in the step sequencer to spread the bass pattern out and have more variety, instead of looping the same pattern repeatedly, which adds more personality and variety to the track. The changes to the bass benefitted my track as I felt the new bass sounded more suited to grime instead of drill music and timed better. Next time I would try different techniques in certain sections; possibly trying to arpeggiate the bass or chopping the notes to give it more movement.

The next thing I wanted to change about the track was I wanted to add some more instruments to give the track energy, add a "B" section to my track, and make the song seem fuller. I added two new instrument tracks to my Logic project; the first was called Cortlandt Alley River Synth in the sampler in Logic and the other instrument was another Faded Keys synth instrument from Alchemy. I added the Alley River Synth instrument I wanted to compliment the bass of the track, so I used a simple and basic pattern in the step sequencer that would work well with the existing bass pattern. For the new Faded Keys instrument track I added, I decided to use shorter notes and try to create a complimentary melody line for the existing elements of my track. I think these changes benefited my track as they allowed me to lead my track in the introduction, they also added variety and rhythm to my track, the variety allowed me to develop a good sounding "B" section and help with making the song feel "fuller". Next time I would use fewer notes, but I would use them more precisely to fit in with the existing instruments already on my track.

The next thing I wanted to change about the track was the tempo and length of the track so that it would reach the one-minute minimum length. I changed the tempo from 130BPM to 140BPM to speed up the track, giving the illusion of it being more energetic. In order to meet the one-minute mark I knew I would have to change the layout of my song, so I created an intro and outro, as well as a "B" section to give the track variety. These changes made a huge difference as the track now had a proper structure with an intro and an outro as well as a variety now with the "B" section. If I were to do this again, I would start with a higher tempo for the track as I felt like it really helped with the energy of the track as soon as I changed it.

The last thing I changed on this track was adding effects to the vocal sample I used in the track. First I added some reverb to give the sample more presence and fit better in the mix, as the sample did not seem natural sounding as a dry signal. Once I had added the reverb and was happy with it I then wanted to automate the sample at the start of the track using a high-pass filter on the channel EQ, to give the impression of a build-up to the drop of the track. I think these changes made my track better as the sample sounded a lot better in my opinion and the intro now sounded like a proper track with a building introduction to the track. If I was to do this again, I would try out different effects on the vocals and experiment a bit more with combining effects.
